Richards will compete in the two-day carnival as the reigning Ballarat Women's Gift titleholder.
The 20-year-old from Aintree near Rockbank showed she is on track for another big performance at the City Oval by taking out the Women's Vase at the Daylesford Gift meet at Cricket Willow on Sunday.
Running off 9.25m, Richards claimed the 100m dash from Nyah Brown (5m), with Sonya Pollard (18.75m) third.
Richards set the tone by winning her heat in the fastest time, but she had to call on all her reserves to hold out Brown, who was on debut in the Victorian Athletic League, in a blanket finish.
The win makes amends after thirds in the event for the past two years
Richards said she had had to adjust to her training to fit in with working around full-time employment rather than university studies, although she was happy with her new routine.
The unassuming Richards has now won four feature sprints, having also saluted in the Warrnambool Women's Gift last season and Keilor Women's Gift in 2018.
Ballarat's Grace O'Dwyer finished fifth in the vase final after winner her heat.
