Acting Senior Sergeant Karen Bain, of Stawell, said the two hikers who spotted the human remains on Monday led seven police members and seven State Emergency Service crew back to the remains on Tuesday.
"I think it's been hard going. From what we're hearing, they've had to go up creek lines and off track," Acting Senior Sergeant Bain said.
"It's very dense, bushy area and quite remote where they were."
The remains were located about 12.50pm near Mount Rosea Track and taken back on a stretcher to the Borough Huts Campground by foot.
"It's off the old Mount Rosea Track, that's now been decommissioned," Acting Senior Sergeant Bain said.
No identifying details have been released at this early stage.
Acting Senior Sergeant Bain said "at this stage it doesn't appear suspicious."
Update 3.19pm: STATEMENT FROM VICTORIA POLICE:
"Police responded following reports of human remains being discovered in the Grampians on Monday 6 January.
Bush-walkers located what they suspected to be remains in bushland area at Bellfield about 12.15pm.
The search that commenced yesterday resumed today and police located what they believe to be remains about 12.50pm.
The remains will be transported to the coroner's office for examination.
The investigation remains ongoing."
Earlier: The State Emergency Service and police are working together to locate suspected human remains which were found in the Grampians on Monday.
Stawell's State Emergency Service deputy controller Brody Stewart says the SES and police are working together to locate the suspected remains, which were found by passers-by in bushland area at Bellfield about 12.15pm.
"Assistance was requested last night and we went out and had a bit of a look around but couldn't find anything," Deputy Controller Stewart said.
"This morning we recommenced the search and the Dunkeld SES unit came up and gave us a hand.
"We're now recommencing the search and will go through until we find something or can rule out the report."
The search is taking place near the Borough Huts campground.
