Police say on January 4 about 9.30am a driver in a white ford ute, bearing false NT licence plates J0324 with a flat right tyre, was driving erratically on Beaufort-Carngham Road heading towards Ballarat.
The vehicle, which had extensive damage to the front of the vehicle, was allegedly travelling about 80kmh on the wrong side of the road into oncoming traffic. The driver allegedly made no attempts to get out of the way of passing vehicles.
The alleged offender was arrested a short time later for Reckless Conduct Endangering Serious Injury and processed. His white ford was impounded.
Police are looking for a driver of a vehicle described as a small white hatch with unknown plates that was heading towards Beaufort at the time.
"According to eye witnesses the (alleged) offending driver drove directly at this small white hatch on the opposite side of the road causing it to swerve and take evasive action," police said in a statement.
Police believe the driver lives or works in Beaufort.
