It is believed the house, at Hickman Street, had been unoccupied for some time.
Firefighters were alerted to the fire about 12.20am and arrived at the scene shortly afterwards.
The house was well alight when they arrived, with neighbours watching on from the street.
Due to the age of the weatherboard home and the shingles in the roof, fire crews remained on scene for several hours to ensure the fire was completely blacked out.
The fire is being treated as suspicious and the house is currently cordoned off with police tape.
A police presence remains at the scene, with detectives and fire investigators to attend the scene later today to determine a cause.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Ballarat Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
