Daniel James Marlow, of Black Hill, appeared in the front row of the court room on Thursday for a committal mention.
He was charged in November with three offences, including dangerous driving causing death, driving in a manner dangerous and careless driving.
Mr Spenceley was killed while riding along Creswick Road at Clunes on March 24.
Defence lawyer Andrew Madden sought permission from the court to cross-examine two lay witnesses, including one who saw the collision occur.
A collision reconstructionist and two police officers are expected to give evidence at the contested committal hearing.
The half-day hearing will be held at the Ballarat Magistrates Court on April 9.
Marlow's bail was extended until then.
Mr Spenceley was a dedicated CFA member, who had been in the service both as an employee and volunteer since 1982. He was involved in the Creswick Football Club.
