Heritage-listed "Yarrowee Hall" is a grand Victorian villa with 14 rooms, surrounded by stunning gardens. Sitting on a 1132 square metre (approx.) block, the 40-square home is truly breathtaking.
The arched ceilings in the entrance hall are nearly eight metres high and draw your eye to the upstairs conservatory.
Other highlights include the gold leaf and hand marbling, deep cornices, bay windows, original wallpaper (imported from France), a claw foot bath, wine cellar and a private outdoor chapel.
There are four separate living areas, including the Princess Room with 23 panels of wallpaper that feature 1099 colours. History reputes that in 1881 this room was used for a royal visit from Prince Albert and his younger brother George (later King George V).
The family bathroom has a claw-foot bath with overhead shower, while there is another full bathroom and three toilets in total.
The original wine cellar is large enough to entertain in, and has been fitted with racks to hold up to 40 dozen bottles. The functional kitchen was renovated approximately 10 years ago in a provincial style and includes a butler's pantry.
There are original fireplaces in some of the five bedrooms, however the home is centrally heated, making it cosy in winter and naturally cool in summer. The huge light-filled panoramic windows also provide loads of natural sunlight.
Outside is a beautiful vine-shaded alfresco area, a spacious garage, established gardens and fruit trees, and a water tank for the gardens. You must see this home to truly take in all the many features it showcases.
The following historical information is listed on the Victorian Heritage Database:
Yarrowee Hall is an eleven roomed Victorian residence built c. 1870. for Robert Malachy Serjeant, the manager of the Band and Albion gold mine in Ballarat.
The Drawing Room of the building contains rare panoramic wall-papers, thought to be of French origins, and the hall-way walls display hand-marbled papers.
Located at the rear of the building is a small chapel which is constructed of hand-cut white quartz blocks.
Yarrowee Hall is significant for aesthetic and historical reasons.
Yarrowee Hall is aesthetically important for its exceptional panoramic and marbled wall-papers.
The papers adorn the walls of the Drawing Room and Entrance Hall and are a very rare example of French scenic papers produced by Desfosse et Karth of Paris c.1861; the Drawing Room is thought to have been used for the visit of Royal Prince Albert and his younger brother George (later King George V) in June 1881.
Yarrowee Hall is of historical importance for its association with Robert Malachy Serjeant, the first member of the Legislative Assembly of Victoria for Ballarat West and also manager of Ballarat's largest mining complex, the Albion and Band mine.
Much of the wealth of Ballarat was founded upon gold mining activities and the house at 1 Darling Street demonstrates the prominence and importance of the manager of Ballarat's largest mine.
Serjeant was the foundation member of the Administrative Council of the School of Mines and became involved with the formation of the Australian Institute of Mining Engineers.
