A decade-long tradition has continued at Ballarat Christian College with year 12 students taking new prep pupils on a school tour on their first day.

The school's secondary students and preps started classes on Friday, with the rest of the primary pupils joining them this week.
"The preps have got 13 years of school in front of them and being welcomed by the big kids about to embark on their last year," said principal Ken Nuridin
Mr Nuridin said the preps would "return the favour" of the first day tours when they escort the year 12 students in to their final assembly on their last day of school.

"It's good for the college community to remind them we are a P-12 school - we are not separate, it's one community," he said.
While Ballarat Christian College prep pupils and newcomers at some other schools took their first step through the classroom door on Friday, hundreds of preps across Ballarat will celebrate their first day at school on Monday.
