Werry is the only one of the seven nominees for the 2019 gong to have won it before.
The former Ballarat Clarendon College student is up for the award again for last year's achievements, which were highlighted by a gold medal in the World Rowing Championships and qualifying her boat for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Tennis ace Zoe Hives is among the other nominees and looks a big chance based on her super 2019 which included a maiden grand slam main draw victory at the Australian Open.
Anna Leighton, Kolbe Poole, Sam Rizzo, Alison Weatherly and Nick White are the others vying for the award.
Finalists for the Wunhym Trophy - for athletes 17 years and under - are Tazmin Forrest (archery), Josh Jolly (BMX), Claire Lightfoot (artistic gymnastics), Jesse Norton (cycling), Alanna Peart (race walking), Jemma Peart (race walking), Harry Sharp (athletics) and Darcy Williams (triathlon).
A range of other awards will be presented on Wednesday night by the hosts, the Ballarat Sportsmen's Club.
Swimming great Kieren Perkins is special guest for the function at the Ballarat Golf Club.
