Two teenage boys are standing trial in Bendigo after pleading not guilty to the murder of John Bourke.
The court heard the 45-year-old was found dead in his Derby Road home on July 15, 2018.
A witness told jurors she was at the house party near Mr Bourke's home on the night of July 14, 2018.
The court heard the next morning she was in her car with a female friend when one of the boys called.
The witness told jurors the boy asked if he could be driven back to the house where the party had been.

The witness then picked up both boys from a street in Maryborough and they drove past Mr Bourke's house on the way.
The boys sat in the back seat of the car, the jury was told, while the witness was in the driver's seat and her friend was in the passenger's seat.
The court was told the witness heard one of the boys say during the drive that "we got the wrong one".
The witness said her friend asked the boys what was said, but neither boy responded.
The witness told the court the boys were "pretty quiet and a bit shaky" during the drive, but she thought it was because the boys were hungover.
The witness told jurors she saw the two boys drinking at the party and one of them had been "unable to hold himself up".
Another witness told the court she saw one of the boys drinking beers and that he "kept falling over".
The trial will continue in Bendigo on Friday.
The trial is expected to run for up to four weeks.
