Nearly twenty years ago, my wife and I had the privilege of living in rural southern France.
Initially we lived about one and a half kilometres from a village before we moved into the village proper.
In all that time, we never had a roadside pick up of our rubbish or recycle material.
When we lived outside the village, we had to take our waste to the local drop-off area where there were four large bins.
One for glass, one for plastics, one for paper / cardboard, and one for general household waste.
It was our responsibility to take our waste to the collection point and put it in the correct bins.
When we moved into the village the same rules applied, except now there were the four bins at the end of our street.
Still no curb-side rubbish pick-up. It was easy. Everyone did it.
If you had elderly neighbours you did it for them.
Now living in rural Victoria, I find it absurd that each week I have to move one or two oversized wheelie-bins out onto the street for the roadside pick up.
Who else in the world does this?
