An opening stand of 184 paved the way to its score of 304 at Eastern Oval on Saturday.
Opener Andrew Falkner finished the day with a century, while fellow opener Josh Pegg produced a knock of 81.
Meanwhile East Ballarat will head into day two chasing a target of 202 set by Mt Clear. Opener Steven Nicholson made 55 for the Mounties. He was backed by tail-ender John Butler with 43.
The Hawks will secure a place in the finals should it chase down the Mounties in a week's time.
Elsewhere Darley will look to build on its score of 144 when it resumes play against Brown Hill. Ballarat-Redan will chase a score of 164 set by Napoleon-Sebastopol. And Wendouree will look to build on its score of 130 against North Ballarat.
