A European holiday and a love of architecture inspired Ballarat Grammar student Marcus Bedford to create a large landmark drawing of his home town.

The intricate drawing of Ballarat buildings that have had an impact on Marcus' life earned him a place in the National Gallery of Victoria's Top Arts 2020 exhibition, a showcase of the best VCE Arts and Studio Arts works from the previous school year.
Marcus was one of 43 students whose works were chosen from more than 1700 submissions for the exhibition, which opens next week.
Travelling around Europe the summer before Year 11, Marcus taught himself line drawing by sketching heritage buildings. He was particularly inspired by the landscape of Monaco, where large buildings appear "stacked" on top of each other for best views of the harbour.
With that vision in mind he rode his bike around Ballarat, using his phone to photograph iconic buildings then arranged them and sketched them to create a Monaco-inspired vista.
The A2 sized drawing took about 60 hours.
"I decided that bigger is better so I got the biggest piece of paper I could find and went and bought the smallest pens from Officeworks - 0.05mm - to get as much detail in as I could."
