Village Early Education area manager Sonia Fagan said the educator had symptoms similar to those of coronavirus and the Village Early Education Eureka centre would be closed until test results were returned.
There have been no confirmed cases of coronavirus at the centre or in Ballarat.
The nearest confirmed case to date has been an attendee at the Golden Plains Music Festival in Meredith.
Mrs Fagan said the closure followed policy and procedure and was a precautionary measure to minimise the health risk to children, families and staff.
"Nurses and doctors have said they are confident the educator doesn't have coronavirus, but because of the current scare, they said they were taking every precaution to minimise the risk and have decided to test her for it regardless," Mrs Fagan said.
"Because we are a childcare centre, to minimise the risk we are following policies and procedures we have been given."
The educator who is unwell worked at Village Early Education Eureka last week. The centre has closed for the rest of today and will close tomorrow until the educator's test results are provided.
"Everyone is feeling confident everyone is going to be okay, we are just closing minimise the risk and ensure the safety of the children and their families," Mrs Fagan said.
"We have been on the phone to the Department of Health and Human Services. We are just following procedure to make sure everyone is safe.
"Our families have been so great about it. They have thanked us for being on top of it."
