After much speculation and community discussion, AFL Goldfields has instructed leagues and associations under its banner to delay play until at least May 31.
This includes the Ballarat, Riddell District, Maryborough Castlemaine District and Central Highlands competitions as well as the AFL Goldfields Women's Football League. It also impacts the Ballarat and Riddell umpire groups.
"Following lengthy consultation with AFL Victoria and Government health experts, recommendations have been passed down for all community football leagues, Auskick and school programs in Victoria to postpone training and matches until 31st May," a statement from AFL Goldfields read.
"AFL Goldfields accepts and endorses these recommendations."
The Ballarat, Riddell District and Central Highlands competitions had been set to commence on April 18, with the Maryborough Castlemaine District league scheduled to start on April 10. The AFL Goldfields Women's season was planned to kick off on April 19.
League boards will now determine how seasons will look, with new fixtures to be created.
"We are working closely with AFL Victoria to work through this extremely unique situation," the statement continued.
"This is a challenging time for everyone concerned. Knowing the positive impact that football and netball clubs have on our local communities, we will be working hard to ensure our seasons are ready to go when deemed safe."
