The annual Ballarat Junior Basketball Tournament is the latest major sporting event in the city to fall over as a consequence of the COVID-19 virus.
Scheduled for the Queen's birthday long weekend, the 49th running of the three-day carnival will have to wait another year.
Basketball Ballarat felt it was preferable to make the call now rather than live in hope of an unlikely last-minute reprieve.
Basketball Ballarat's new home, the multi-million dollar Ballarat Sports and Events Centre, had been preparing for a series of high-profile events in including the junior tournament - before the COVID-19 outbreak.
A Victorian country junior championship and the national under-18 championships had been scheduled for the facility as well as Super Netball pre-season game.
The NBL1 season has also been cancelled, with the Ballarat Miners and Rush withdrawing before the men's and women's competitions were abandoned for the year.
