Stephens produced his first winning double.
What made the achievement all the more rewarding was the triumph of first-starter Wingate Guy - a gelding which he had his father Allan bred and had the patience to wait until he was a 4yo before taking him to the races.
The day did end in mixed emotions for Stephens though.
Jayden Brewin, who drove each of the Stephens winners, was lucky to escape serious injury when he "wrote off" his car trying to avoid a kangaroo on his way to a night race meeting at Shepparton.
Fowsands ($1.70 favourite) provided the first leg of the double for Stephens, who trained a winner with his first starter five years ago.
An 8yo pacer, Fowsands began his career in Tasmania and has now tasted success five times in two years in Stephens' care.
Wingate Guy ($21.80) continues a good run for Stephens with the progeny of broodmare Alberts Belle, with Union Belle winning 11 races.
BERRINGA trainers AJ and BJ Tindale also had a double at Stawell.
They saluted with 3yo pacer Whats Stanley Got ($7.50) and Rosarito Beach ($4.20).
Whats Stanley Got has won twice and had two placings in four starts since joining the stable from South Australia.
LEXTON trainer Ash Herbertson also continued a fine run.
He scored with Cyriliscious ($4.50) at Stawell after producing a treble at Cranbourne on Monday.
