We're all in this together
THERE are many definable benefits to be had from buying local. Shops and other small businesses - whether they offer products, services, or both - tend to employ the local people.
On top of that, a lot of smaller independent businesses, and even plenty of franchise or dealer outlets, are actually owned by local people too. Buying local is also handy whenever you need after-sales support.
The benefits are not just limited to supporting small independent operators either.
Plenty of larger organisations also give back to the community in some way, be it through supporting charitable organisations, sponsorship of local sporting or community groups, or even things like DIY and project workshops to improve the knowledge and skills of their local customer base.
Many businesses, organisations and groups also go to various lengths to incentivise buying local.
Governments and councils tend to have policies that encourage it, and chamber of commerce groups organise various things like events, reward programs, and other initiatives.
We're doing what we can.
While it can be tempting in times of crisis to minimise charitable commitments and donations, this local Ballarat business, Country Casseroles, continues to be a proud supporter of its community, even through these most challenging times.
For the past 11 years Country Casseroles has supported the Salvation Army and the local Soup Bus. In fact, in the past fortnight alone, Country Casseroles has donated over $1000 to these organisations at a time when these charities need support from the community more than ever.
This commitment is over and above Ian and Trish's own initiative called Pay it Forward Ballarat.
"With the support of local suppliers like Wilsons Fruit and Vegetables and Sinclair Meats, this is a way Ballarat locals can "donate a meal" to the less fortunate individuals and families around Ballarat who are struggling," Ian said.
"Winter is fast approaching, and this is a critical time to offer support for these vulnerable people. We remain as committed as ever to assisting those less fortunate around Ballarat, regardless of the economic situation.
"For us, like many businesses, the last few weeks have been challenging with meat and vegetable prices increasing substantially. But we will absorb these costs and have undertaken a price freeze for the next six months to minimise any additional costs to our customers and charities.
"Hopefully then everyone, especially our senior customers, can still enjoy healthy, tasty and nutritious meals without the guilt you get from typical fast-food."
Like many businesses throughout Ballarat, Country Casseroles continues to do what they can to keep Ballarat moving forward.
