Selina Norman says supermarket workers, many in their first ever jobs, are under enormous pressure due to buying limits, lack of stock and angry customers, but should be given the respect that has been shown to other essential workers
"I've seen clips of people overseas giving a one minute applause to health care workers, I'd love to see something like that here for supermarket workers," she said.
"I think it would be great if we were all able to organise something for these workers."
Ms Norman said supermarkets were doing their best in a bad situation.
"A lot of people are copping a lot flack lately and it's putting an enormous pressure on their workers," she said.
"There's a lot of young people and they are doing the best they can to help everyone. Who knows who is coming through the doors, whether they are sick or not."
Ms Norman's campaign comes as tighter restrictions on shopper numbers are introduced to supermarkets. Woolworths, Coles, IGA, Foodworks and Aldi said they "may limit the number of customers in stores to help maintain social distancing."
Customers are also being told that there may be longer than usual queues over the Easter weekend.
