Four potential redevelopment options had been canvassed - three different sites in the town where a new school could be built or expansion of the current school site in Dundas St, with the latter being chosen for the $21.6 million project.
The redevelopment plans include 10 new classrooms, new entry and administration, arts room, music room, food tech facilities, kitchen veggie garden and landscaped open play areas.
There will also be a new competition grade gymnasium and football oval which will be used by the community after school hours.
The school's enrolment has trebled over the past nine years to about 450 pupils bursting the seams of the 1.6 hectare site, where schools of comparable size are on about 3.5 hectares.
The new site will annex about 3.6 hectares next to the existing school making it about 5.2 hectares overall - about the same size as new secondary college sites according to Miners Rest Primary School principal Dale Power.
"It's really exciting to be taking this next step," Mr Power said.
"We had a large part in the design some time ago and these plans are really a representation of the community consultation process we undertook with the Victorian School Building Authority and Department of Education."
Mr Power said the new facilities would improve the lives of not just the school's students, staff and families but the wider Miners Rest community.
"Just having the right play spaces will be wonderful. our oval is pretty second rate and all this space is going to open up all the options and collaboration points for our students to engage in.
"Now everyone is tripping over each other and we anticipate this will help immensely with our wellbeing and reduce the number of incidents we have in the playground."
The school crush has put pressure on playgrounds, classrooms, car parking and roads surrounding the school and resulting in a growing number of potentially dangerous incidents.
The school currently has 16 classes and no space for a 17th despite numbers growing an average of one class a year.
"For our community who have been much deserving this for a long time it will be lovely - and our school councillors have worked so hard for this."
The new sporting facilities will also be open for community use outside school hours.

"We've got more kids in school each year, more children exit year six and become teenagers and become more independent. After hours they are looking for engaging things to do and sport is a great avenue. If we've got a competition grade basketball court and facilities and oval they can access year around it will be great."
The state government budgeted $4.5 million in the 2018 state budget to master plan and buy land for the new or redeveloped school, and promised a further $17.1 million in August that year when education minister James Merlino visited the school as part of the election campaign.
