Not long after the sun had set, the sky lit up as what appeared to be a dazzling meteor shower flew over head.
There is also speculation it could be space junk re-entering the atmosphere, given the relatively slow speed at which it was moving.
The amazing show lit up the night sky, with the lights appearing to travel in a southerly direction.
Such was the brightness of the incident, there were emergency calls throughout Victoria for people thinking it was an aircraft in trouble.
This follows the Eta Aquariids meteor shower two weeks ago, which was dust from Halley's Comet.
They were visible just outside Ballarat, but were not reported to be anywhere near as bright as this.
The Courier has contacted the Ballarat observatory to see what it might have been.
More to come.
