League president Doug Hobson is content to sit and wait for further AFL Victoria and state government guidance with the intention to get games up and running at some stage this year.

"I think it's important to try and get some sport going this year, for the clubs that have put the work in and also just for the social aspect, providing you do it in a safe manner," Hobson told The Courier on Monday.

"I've got family members which are compromised in their health or are very old. I'd feel comfortable for them to come along to the football and sit in their car and watch footy.

"That is as good as self isolating at home. It just gets them out of their own space and is able to get them out to watch something they enjoy watching."

Hobson said, as he has many times before, that the league's board was just waiting for some parameters to work with before deciding what a season might look like.

"We are still going forward with that direction of having games and the rest. It's just a matter of getting a starting date," he said.

Last week, AFL Victoria released its revised return to play protocols, which now allows groups of 20 to train at one time. However, there is strictly no physical contact allowed between players. This rules out bumping, tackling and marking contests.

Many clubs across the region have decided not to run formal training until more is known about when a season might begin.

At least four leagues around Victoria have called an early end to 2020 as COVID-19 restrictions continue to hamper the sport.

The Ballarat Football Netball League is yet to make a decision on the year, but chairman Adrian Bettio told The Courier last Friday that the season would be abandoned if one club decided it didn't want to be involved.

"All clubs have to opt in otherwise it's off. It's that simple," he said.

Bettio also revealed that some club presidents have already made it clear they are happy for the season to be called off.
