It is understood the incident occurred at the Mount Clear mine just before 5pm on Sunday.
Ambulance Victoria confirmed on Wednesday they transferred a patient to the Ballarat Base Hospital with an "upper-body injury" at the time.
The man was later that night transferred to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with the hospital also confirming on Wednesday he remained there in a stable condition.
The incident comes one month before new workplace legislation comes into law across Victoria.
The new laws relate to workplace manslaughter and will see employers found negligent in the death of a worker face fines of up to $16 million or up to 20 years in jail.
The mine was contacted for comment.
