The Roos made an approach to the CHFL board in a bid to help lift the numbers needed to ensure a competition in 2020.

However, it was not to be as the board decided against running seniors and reserves football.

Speaking over the weekend, Waubra president Simon Tol was clearly disappointed with the outcome.

"I'm extremely disappointed for the playing group... (we were) very, very keen to play and to follow on from last year and give them a chance to go back-to-back in whatever competition that was presented," Tol told The Courier.

"The players had put in a lot of work. Not only our club, but a lot of players around... there was a little bit of hope and that's all gone."

While trying to boost the numbers needed for a senior competition to get off the ground, Tol said the motivation for asking to field two teams was to allow as many people as possible to play football. This came after the league had declared no reserves grade would be occurring.

"We would have had to turn guys away, which is not fair for them," he said.

Waubra was one of five clubs in the CHFL that committed to a senior football season. The Roos were joined by Bungaree, Creswick, Hepburn and Learmonth as those agreeing to field teams in 2020.

Tol said it was unclear what the future would hold for his club and others.

"It's a big unknown and not only for our club, but for every other club out there," he said.

"Obviously you are going to lose some players and hopefully you retain them, but in a real world that's not going to happen."

Tol hinted that discussions had already begun with some clubs around the region about organising some sort of competition later this year, which could include sides from outside the region.
