It is understood the war memorial along with the playground and surrounding areas were vandalised, as were some properties.
In a post on Facebook, the Committee For Miners Rest said it was "very heartbreaking and disappointing to see".
Councillor Grant Tillett has also weighed in, saying that it was "really very sad to see the desecration of the memorial to those who served and lost their lives in the pursuit of peace over 100 years ago in the park at Miners Rest.
"All they achieved was to just add a bit more cost on the job of keeping the place presentable - nothing more."
He urged people who live in the area to be on alert, and to contact police if they see or hear anything suspicious.
Also on Facebook, councillor Amy Johnson said it was "sad to see such disrespect".
It is understood the City of Ballarat will clean up the graffiti today.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to make a report at crimestoppers.com.au
