Daylesford/Hepburn has 165 years of boom and bust.
Gold, the waters in late 19th century, the 1920's, the 1950's and now the 21st Century.
Each boom busted for a reason.
Now we have the most likely cohort of virus spreaders, 20 to 35 year olds, flooding in from Melbourne every weekend.
They flood the CBD, ignore social distancing, and behave like they are bulletproof.
The consequence may not only be the spread across Melbourne via the cross fertilisation.
The other consequence is that locally the virus will catch on.
Each period of bust after boom here has lasted decades.
When Daylesford/Hepburn becomes a hot spot the bust will last a long, long time.
People from Mont Albert, and other places may think providing dollars to local cafes is a blessing and local operators may be happy to take that immediate revenue.
Long term, however, this crowding of Daylesford is leading to another decade or more of dark ages.
The noticeable absence of police on the streets these last few weeks indicates that dealing with upper middle class, mainly white people is not a priority.
They can do what they like.
Brain Hawkes, Daylesford.
