Golden Mountain Chinese Takeaway Food in Sturt Street has been closed since late in May after owner Sanh Thai's wife suffered a stroke at home on May 21 and has since been transported to hospital in Melbourne for treatment.

A note on the door of restaurant apologised to customers for the inconvenience the closure had caused with Mr Thai saying he hopes to see customers again.

Mr Thai said it was with great sadness that he had to close to popular eatery, but he needed to be with his stricken wife - aged just 50 - at this time.

He said his thoughts have turned to the probability of having to sell the business.

"We can't open the business at the moment, she is in St Vincent's Hospital and I need to be with her every day," Mr Thai said.

"I think we will probably have to sell up which is very unfortunate."

Mr Thai said he had lived in Ballarat for 34 years, with the restaurant "around about 25-30 years old".

He said it was sad to close, but he still held out hope that it might be able to reopen one day if his wife was to get better.
