In a newletter to the university community, Fed Uni said the student received a positive test in Melbourne late Thursday but had not been on campus since Wednesday, July 22. The student spent July 20-22 in residential units, which are now being deep cleaned.
Other student in the unit are self-isolating and being tested as close contacts.
The university has largely been closed to on-campus activity with a shift to online learning through the pandemic.
This comes as one new coronavirus case was identified in Ballarat leading into weekend. It is unclear whether this case was the FedUni student. This was also the first new case in City of Ballarat for the week.
Ballarat's overall COVID-19 tally jumped from 24 to 25 on Friday but only 10 cases remain listed as 'active'.
Ballarat Health Services reports three infected persons are in a stable condition in the Base Hospital and the health services was treating a further seven across the region in home isolation.
Moorabool remained steady with 12 actives cases while Golden Plains was unchanged on eight on day one of new restrictions in each shire.
Residents in both shires are unable to have visitors within their house - this includes on their property, for example, a backyard barbecue. They also cannot visit other people's homes, even if these homes are outside the shire limits, for example, in City of Ballarat.
Moorabool and Golden Plains residents can, however, meet friends in pubs, restaurants, cafes and parks under existing stage two restrictions.
This comes as restrictions are tightened on the wider Geelong region under heightened risk of community transmission in private homes. There were 73 active cases in Geelong on Friday.
There are no active cases in Hepburn or Pyrenees shires.
