The Rotary Club of Alfredton has been working on establishing the new Rotary Centennial Park- which is adjacent to Winters Swamp and the Mullawallah Wetlands - since September 2018.
It all started when now president David Sanders discovered the park, which is a catchment area for the wetlands.
Overgrown with Phalaris and Gorse bushes, the club made inquiries about how the piece of crown land could be cleaned up to be an area the public could use.
The club took on the task of cleaning up the area, removing weeds and planting about 300 trees to date.
An information sign has also been erected, which identifies the wildlife there and the benefits that the wetlands have as part of the broader ecosystem.
The club has invested about $7000 into the project, though it has also been supported by many local businesses - one man mows the park for free, while some of the trees have also been provided free of charge.
The park was officially unveiled on August 2 - National Tree Day - by the club, the Rotary District Governor Phillip Beasley and the Mayor of the City of Ballarat, Ben Taylor.
Mr Sanders said the park was a "lovely resource for the community" that would soon be in the centre of Ballarat as the city continues to grow.
At the unveiling, bird boxes were installed and 130 trees were planted.
It is hoped that eventually trees will be planted around the perimeter of the area.
It'll be a jewel in Lucas's crown and in 20 or 50 years time it'll be the next Lake Wendouree
- David Sanders
"It'll be a jewel in Lucas's crown and in 20 or 50 years time it'll be the next Lake Wendouree," Mr Sanders said.
"Hopefully we can get a nice walking trail and people will be able to walk around and there will be beautiful trees and people can look at the birds."
The club will continue to plant more trees in future, and hope the community will contribute by purchasing and planting a tree to leave a lasting legacy and bolster the environment.
A name plaque will be installed to recognise these contributions, with money raised invested into the park's future development.
