Investigators have been told a green Holden Commodore sedan was driven at a fast rate of speed around a roundabout on Albert and Hertford Streets about 1.40pm on July 29.
The driver lost control, mounted the median strip and crashed into a street-light, causing the rear wheel to fly off the vehicle to the other side of Albert Street.
The male driver who was perceived as being Caucasian, 180cm tall with a thin build and fair hair, was seen climbing out of the car through the driver's side window.
The man then got into a green Mitsubishi Pajero, being driven by someone else, which has driven off along Albert Street.
Police would like to speak to anyone who saw the crash or has dash camera footage.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or file a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
