The BCA board met online on Monday night, and while not much was able to be set in concrete, it was decided to push on with October 3 round one matches if permitted.
Stage three measures in regional Victoria prevent community sport from occurring. As it stands, these are potentially set to expire after September 13.
BCA president Rob Florence had previously flagged that clubs might require more time for pre-season training than the few weeks after restrictions are lifted, but said the board now believed it was best to begin as originally planned.
"The only decision really that was made was that if everything is okay as from September 13, we will kick off the season as of October 3," he said.
"But the more we discussed it we ended up sort of looking at each other on the screen and said that there's no real point making any further plans because we just don't know what the outcome of the restrictions will be... to what level will they change the restrictions?"
Florence said the BCA really had to just sit and wait before making any major decisions.
The next board meeting is scheduled for September 14, but will be held earlier if required.
"We are basically in the hands of the heath authorities and government directions," Florence said.
Florence said there were no plans in place to cancel the season, believing cricket could even start as late as the new year if required.
"If we can't start until Christmas then you play nine one-day games afterwards," he said.
"Clubs are as keen as mustard. If all restrictions lifted on October 2, they'd still want to start on October 3."
The BCA has received senior team nominations and they will be addressed as normal by the pennant committee.
In a tentative fixture released in July, the 2020-21 season was marked to kick off on October 3 for firsts, seconds and thirds, with fourths starting a week later and fifths a week after that.
