Glenn O'Gorman's bad driving occurred on the Western Highway from Great Western to Armstrong in July.
He reached speeds of between 130km/h and 140km/h, overtook vehicles in the emergency lane and tried to overtake a truck.
When O'Gorman approached Armstrong, outside Ararat, he crashed into a tree 40 metres off the highway.
Police arrived and arrested O'Gorman and found he was in possession of 14 grams of green vegetable matter, believed to be cannabis.
He was taken to the Ararat Police Station.
O'Gorman pleaded guilty to a number of charges, including dangerous driving, refusing a drug test and possessing cannabis, at the Ballarat Magistrates' Court last week.
Magistrate Jonathan Klestadt took into account O'Gorman had been in custody for 51 days and further imprisonment could have "serious consequences" on his future.
O'Gorman was convicted and sentenced to time already served, placed on a 12-month community corrections order and disqualified from driving for 12 months.
The court was told O'Gorman, who had no fixed address, would live at Stawell.
