The 22-year-old received a good behaviour bond at the Ballarat Magistrates' Court on Monday for one charge of driving disqualified.
Police intercepted the man driving at Warrenheip at 12.15am on March 4, 2020.
He told police he knew his licence had been suspended due to demerit points but was he 'just out for a drive'.
The man told the court he made a 'stupid decision' to go out for a drive with mates, but he did not know he had to go to VicRoads to get his licence renewed.
Magistrate Letizia Torres told the man not to drive until he knew exactly what he needed to do to regain his licence.
She said she would sentence him to a one-year good behaviour bond because it was his first time before the court, but warned him he would be re-sentenced if he did the wrong thing.
"If you are tempted to drive, you are going to get into trouble, you will breach the bond and that will be problematic for you," Ms Torres said.
"You will keep setting yourself back on your Ps."
