Ballarat City Council will vote on Wednesday night to put Djila-tjarriu (pronounced jilla-ja-roo) forward to the Victorian Registrar for approval. The names means "place of play" in Wadawurrung language.
The four-hectare play space is in the Ballymanus estate, off Ballarat-Carngham Road, and unofficially opened mid-year with the temporary development name Ballaymanus Central Park.
City of Ballarat received seven objections to the name Djila-tjarriu, mostly for inconsistencies in keeping to the Irish-themed naming of streets in the estate or for the lack of opportunity to vote and explore other options.
The City's officer's report deemed, based on naming principles: "naming authorities should not name places after commercial businesses, trade names, estate names (which are solely commercial in nature)...Names with historical connections to places are preferred".
VicNames strongly encourages council to work on new place names with traditional owners in a bid to help preserve the language uniqueness to each region.
City of Ballarat worked closely with Wadawurrung traditional owners for an appropriate park name.
The City received 13 formal submissions in favour of supporting Ballarat's indigenous heritage in naming the park as an opportunity to better understand the culture and language of the traditional owners.
According to the report, the City "received substantial support from the wider community" in also supporting other City of Ballarat's indigenous culture and heritage promotion.
Djila-tjarriu is in line with previous park names put forward in the City's Ballarat West growth area.
The park features play equipment, multi-purpose courts, skate tracks, a grassed oval, running track and picnic facilities.
