"He's a great kid and will fit in well with some of the other young ones at the club," he said.
"We all get on well, he's a likable guy and he's looking forward to bowling with us."
Wood will play alongside his father Tony Wood at Ballarat, if the season gets underway later this year. Fothergill said he would most likely take on the role of skipper.
"He's a social member down here and decided he wanted to come down and play with his dad and the guys," he said.
"At Deer Park he was travelling back and forth and he reckons the standard in Ballarat is similar."
Wood marked the only new addition to the club, which exited the 2019-20 finals series in straight sets.
Fothergill said the side was eager to push on after finishing at the top of the competition ladder last season.
"We've got great bowlers and we can only keep trying," Fothergill said.
"We have a good nucleus of young guys and a couple of older guys to keep them under control."
Meanwhile the club bid farewell to Shane Wilson, who opted to sit the 2020-21 season out.
The news follows reports all pennant competitions might delayed until the new year.
last month, BDBD president Marilyn Blake said she would not be surprised if the Saturday and Monday pennants got delayed until the new year amid the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
