O'Keefe was president as a young Frawley came through the ranks of the Demons and watched on as he forged a long and successful career in the AFL as a player, coach and member of the media.
Today marks one year since Frawley died, aged 56, in a single vehicle crash near Gordon. It was a shock for his family and friends, including those at the Bungaree Football Netball Club, which has a grandstand named in his honour.
Frawley played 240 games for St Kilda and represented Victoria in 11 before coaching Richmond in 113.
"There's been no footy this year and no one has been together since Christmas really," O'Keefe said.
"I think it's been hard for everybody to deal with. Not just Danny, but the whole thing and because we're not together we sort of haven't spoken much about Danny in the last 12 months at all. We just haven't been around as a group."
O'Keefe said Frawley was the same man as the one many of us who didn't know him saw on television and heard on the radio.
"He's just a great bloke and a lot of fun," he said.
"We got great promotion out of Danny because he was always a Bungaree boy. He was never Ballarat or anywhere else, just Bungaree. It was unbelievable.
"He never forgot who he was and where he was from. That was his greatest thing and he never really had an enemy in life I don't think because everybody just liked him."
Demons president Andrew Maher said it was likely a game would be played in Frawley's honour if football can resume as normal in 2021.
"I've got no doubt it's hard for the whole community because no one has been able to catch up and even help people through their grieving process," Maher said.
"Our thoughts and prayers are certainly with the family in this time and us as a club are there for them.
"We're all thinking about Danny... 12 months has gone quick, but it feels like yesterday and it's very raw still."
