Ballarat apprentice jockey Will Price's riding skills were tested to the limit as the barrier stall opened for his second of the day at Warracknabeal on Saturday.
His mount Captain Arjento knuckled, hit its nose on the ground and sent Price over his head.
The youngster managed to grab hold and hang on near the seven-year-old's neck for about 100m before losing his grip and hitting the turf.
Although a little shaken, he was quickly to his feet.
Stewards later reported Price was declared fit after being examined by a doctor.
He did not have any other riding commitments for the day.
Captain Arjento, which is trained by Price's master Dan O'Sullivan, was also cleared of any injury.
