Eagles president Peter Clifford confirmed on Wednesday that the club had appointed Adam Toohey and Ron Watt as joint senior coaches for the 2021 Central Highlands Football League campaign.
Watt served as head coach during 2018 and 2019 and was then joined by Toohey, but no season ever got underway in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Clifford said it was pleasing to have the pair on board again and believed Toohey and Watt provided a good mix of attributes for the playing group.
"I think it's a good combination and it was working really well until unfortunately we got shut down," he said.
Clifford said Watt, who works with the AFL Coaches' Association, was a great person to help Toohey learn in his first stint as a senior coach.
Watt played two games for Geelong, but is probably best known for his roles off the field. He guided the VFL side for five seasons, winning the flag with Gary Ablett, Jimmy Bartel, Steve Johnson, Paul Chapman and James Kelly.
"If you were going to be taught, I wouldn't have thought there'd be a more highly qualified coach in country footy in Victoria to be teaching anybody," Clifford said.
"For young blokes that were looking to learn what was going on I would think that he would probably be as highly regarded as anybody to learn from."
Toohey, who will serve as an on-field playing coach, said it was disappointing not to get underway this year, but supported the CHFL's decision not to go ahead.
"Footy wise I really think it's going to significantly benefit us," Toohey said.
"We have obviously been around the mark for a few years now and I think this year off allows us to really recharge mentally to get that real hunger for that premiership.
"The drive has never been so strong I feel. Even a lot of blokes in our group chat were commenting about how last Saturday was grand final day and how we wished we were playing and getting that flag."
Toohey said the break would also have a physical benefit on some players within the group, including Zac Ryan who is recovering from an ACL injury.
"(And it will also help) our more senior blokes having that year off to freshen their bodies up to give it a real shake," he said.
"Even our under-18 boys that were coming up this year are another year older and body-wise more ready to have a big impact."
Gordon was beaten in the preliminary final by eventual premiers Waubra last year after finishing the regular rounds in third spot on the ladder.
On Tuesday, AFL Goldfields confirmed the Eagles would operate with 42 player points in season 2021. It is the same allocation it received in both 2019 and 2020.
