A man in his 50s is lucky to be alive following a serious crash in Ballarat's CBD on Thursday afternoon.

The man, who was taken to the Ballarat Base Hospital in a stable condition, was driving his white Ford Falcon along Mair Street near the Ripon Street roundabout about 1pm before veering onto the wrong side of the road.
He narrowly avoided house fences and cars before crashing into a tree near Quarry Lane.

The man remained in the car for almost 30 minutes while being treated by paramedics after the incident about 1pm.
Investigations were underway if it was a possible medical episode.
He suffered injuries to his upper and lower body.
