The Stawell youngster, who has played the past few seasons with the Greater Western Victoria Rebels, is off to join Melbourne after being taken by the Demons with pick 48.
Simmons had almost given up hope of being drafted to the elite women's competition before her name was called out on the live stream.
"It was getting towards the end of the fourth round and it was Melbourne's last pick and it was pick 48. I was (thinking) this was sort of my last chance. It was so nerve-racking then," the 18-year-old said.
"When I got picked I just jumped up, started screaming. It was just so awesome.
"I had waited a while and watched all the other girls get drafted. I was so happy for them, but when they called my name out it was awesome."
Simmons was one of three Rebels to be taken in the draft, with Maggie Caris also selected by Melbourne and Renee Saulitis recruited by St Kilda.
The Stawell Secondary College student said the Demons had shown plenty of interest in her during the draft process.
"They were the first club to show interest in me and from there they just continued on to give me the support and were just really good with me," she said.
"The other clubs were good as well, but I definitely knew leading up to the draft that if it was going to be any club it would be Melbourne.
"It still hasn't sunk in yet, but I'm really grateful that I've got the opportunity to now play for Melbourne."
It has been a whirlwind period for Simmons, who has been busy with year 12 schooling and even had to sit her GAT the morning after being selected. But the self-proclaimed "mad footy head" is just excited and looking forward to what's in store.
"I'm all new to this, my family is all new to this," she said.
"I'm a girl from Stawell and I've probably got to pack my things soon and head down to Melbourne."
