The 26-year-old was not offered a contract by the Cairns Taipans ahead of the 2020-21 campaign. The club offered its last roster spot to forward George Blagojevic, who completed the club's Australian contingent of players.
Taipans assistant coach Jamie O'Loughlin told the Cairns Post the club still rated Fisher but it needed a bigger body in his place.
"He has been nothing but first class about it all and handled it maturely," he said.
Fisher was awarded his first full time contract with Taipans last season after a stint with the Perth Wildcats. Prior to that he played with the Ballarat Miners in the SEABL competition.
However he faced increased competition for a new NBL job after clubs were forced to reduce their rosters from 12 to 10 players due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
He will play for the Cairns Marlins in the NBL1 North competition next season.
