Walsh, who lives with motor neurone disease, is the 2020 AFL Auskick Volunteer of the Year.
The former president of the Daylesford Football Netball Club had previously been named the Victorian winner, but is now regarded as the standout volunteer in the country.
Walsh was chosen over six other nominees.
In announcing the National Volunteer Awards winners, the AFL stated Walsh had seen the need for his club to establish an Auskick program to help introduce young children to the game and had continued running the centre since.
"Despite recent health challenges, Steve still gets on with the job of coordinating the Auskick program for the Daylesford kids and has trained another member of the club to run the Auskick sessions each week as he was no longer able to do this," the AFL wrote on its website.
