Premier Daniel Andrews on Friday confirmed two of the new cases are "low positive results".
"Further testing and examination is underway to determine whether they are in fact false positives," he said.
The two remaining cases are also under investigation to see if they are linked to known outbreaks.
The four cases are in the local government areas of Brimbank, Hume, Greater Dandenong and Wyndham but it is unclear which are the false positives and which are linked to known outbreaks.
THE PAST PROBLEM OUT WEST
Victoria's chief health officer Brett Sutton said one potential case travelled "in and around Deer Park" and recommended all residents to get tested at 106 Station Street between 9am and 4.30pm.
No new deaths were reported on Friday, with the state's death toll remaining 819 and the national figure at 907.
Melbourne's rolling new cases average rose from 2.4 to 2.6 on Friday, but mystery cases to Tuesday dropped by half to two.
The corresponding figures remain zero for regional Victoria.
Some 23,583 were tested for COVID-19 on Thursday.
Ahead of the weekend, Mr Andrews encouraged all Victorians to follow the rules at the state continues to open up.

"Following the rules - and I know the rules are not fun - but they're there to keep us open, they are there to keep us safe."
