The outdoor museum had been closed for months because of the coronavirus restrictions, but staff took it in their stride, using the unscheduled closure to complete maintenance and give buildings a fresh coat of paint.
There are also hand sanitisers installed at each doorway and more COVID-safe information on signs, as well as limits on the number of people allowed at some attractions.
Indoor experiences were closed, but there were plenty of people keen for a ride on the horse and buggy.
Saturday was the first day new Sovereign Hill Museums Association president Craig Fletcher was able to get on-site with visitors.
"We're really thrilled to see so many people embracing Sovereign Hill, and welcoming back the Sovereign Hill family," he said enthusiastically.
"We have the happy juxtaposition of the 1850s in a COVID-safe environment - we're endeavouring to ensure visitors have a great experience, a memorable experience, but a COVID-safe experience."
Visitors are encouraged to book ahead, as there will be caps on the number of people allowed inside each day.
