Showbiz Cinemas have been transforming Ballarat Showgrounds to open the gates on Friday night in a six-month venture to bring the big screen back in what has become a popular iso-trend across the world.
Trolls World Tour, Rocky Horror Show and classic drive-in move Grease will beam on the new screens this weekend in what is the city's first drive-in theatre experience since Village Southern closed in June 1991 with the likes of Home Alone and Edwards Scissorhands.
Showbiz Cinemas teamed up with Ballarat Agricultural and Pastoral Society for the project amid a resurgence of the car-comfy movie watch during the pandemic.
Both parties were keen to introduce a whole new generation of movie-goers to the experience that, instead of speakers hooked in via the car window, will have soundtracks broadcast via FM radio.
A full candy bar will operate via an app with delivery straight to your car door.
The new Showgrounds cinema will be a block or so away from where Skyline stood off Norman Street from 1954 to 1984. All that remains on the site are nostalgic street names after movie greats: Bogart Drive, Redford Drive, Spielberg Court and Newman Court.
Tickets are on sale now.
