But if there's any positive that has come out of the the past eight months, it has been how Ballarat locals have finally discovered the historic gem on the edge of the CBD.
All businesses, except for Main Bar have remained open during the pandemic - Main Bar has now reopened - and have reported a steady stream of locals who some say 'didn't even know what was there'.
On December 11, traders are hoping to entice many more Ballarat locals to visit the historic precinct and are creating a one-night only shopping experience.
Main Road Traders Inc secretary Sherryn Bailey the traders were a group of creative, determined and optimistic retailers.
"Trading this year has been difficult, but we have tenaciously hung on and kept our doors open," she said.
"Many Ballarat customers searching for open shops during the lockdown were surprised that we even existed. We heard it dozens of times."
On Friday December 11 The Main Road Traders are holding a Twilight Sale from 6-9pm.
"Businesses will be offering generous discounts and live entertainment is planned. There may even be a visit by a certain jolly rotund fellow," she said.
"All our shops are original buildings dating from the 1850's. We are one of the oldest areas in Ballarat, and, dare I say, certainly the most quirky.
"Our buildings embody stories of the colourful early days of the gold rush. Where once were gin palaces, music halls, hotels and even brothels there's now an eclectic variety of vintage fashion, antiques and collectables, bespoke textiles, custom tattoos, beautiful secondhand books, a great bar with live music and an award-winning restaurant."
Ms Bailey added that the street was 'dog friendly' so if you're keen to bring your pet down on the night, you're welcome.
She said it was hoped that this year's twilight shopping could lead to a potential bigger and better Christmas market being run from Main Road in coming years.
