A semi-trailer carrying a full load of soil and a silver Holden collided at the off-ramp intersection causing the truck to roll and come to rest on an embankment on the side of the road.
Miraculously, the truck driver, a 60-year-old man from Werribee, escaped with just minor head injuries and was taken to Ballarat Base Hospital. The driver of the car was uninjured, despite much of the passenger side of the vehicle being severely damaged.
Sergeant David Whitwell said it was believed the truck had been travelling down the off-ramp from the Western Highway and had come into some difficulty which had forced it to miss the left hand turn at the base of the hill and spear across Daylesford Road.
The car, which was travelling south was clipped on the passenger side and spun around as the truck crashed into the embankment on the other side of the road, before rolling.
It took out two poles, but miraculously just missed a third light tower by less than a metre.
Sergeant Whitwell said it was incredibly lucky that there were no serious injuries as it could have been a horrific scene, with the road normally busy just before 9am.
He said investigations were ongoing and traffic was urged to avoid the area for much of the morning.
