Hepburn Shire Council has been collecting glass from the Daylesford Transfer Station for about 12 months.

Simon Mennie, Waste Coordinator, said the council had been accepting glass from residents and businesses for free and had accumulated 50 tonnes of clean glass during this time.

Working with a local contractor able to crush concrete at their facility, the glass was crushed in with reclaimed concrete.

"We ended up with a mix that is about 75 per cent glass and 25 per cent crushed concrete," Mr Mennie said.

The council is hoping to use the mix for sub road base, which means it would be used to prepare a road before it is surfaced.

It will not be used for road surfacing, where shards of glass could come into contact with tyres.

While the council is still working to ensure the material is up to standards, Mr Mennie said the next step would be to test a relatively small volume.

A road to test the material on hasn't been nominated yet, but Mr Mennie said council would let the community know when it was. It is expected to be trialed early next year.

Currently about 1000 tonnes of glass is popped in bins to be recycled across the shire each year.

With the state government to introduce a four bin system during the next several years, mandating that glass be separated from other recyclable materials, Mr Mennie said this was one option for the council.

"This trial will give us some guidance on what we can use glass for in the future," he said.

"If this is successful we can work out how much of our glass we can use on our roads and then go from there."

Mr Mennie said transport costs were often the most expensive part of recycling, so to deal with some glass locally would also save money.

It would also be more environmentally friendly, removing the emissions from transporting the glass for processing.

Mr Mennie said the council would be led by the market and the statewide changes to the glass recycling streams for further ideas as to how glass the shire's glass could be recycled.
