After discovering the lease would soon end, and current operations moved to the Delacombe Town Centre, the residents say action must be taken to keep the post office running.
Joan Brown, 87, said she had been walking the streets and knocking on doors to get signatures for her petition, which Ballarat MP Catherine King has supported.
She said she was worried when elderly residents told her they had no idea the post office was closing - for them, it's not just a place to pick up mail, it's also a place to pay bills and manage banking after in-person bank branches closed.
"I've got four pages at the minute of signatures, no one has refused me," she said.
"We rely on (the post office), they're saying go to Mount Clear or Redan - I've got lily-white skin, I'd sizzle in the summer and be a block of ice in the winter.
"Something's got to be done, that's why we're going with a petition."
City of Ballarat councillor Des Hudson and long-time Sebastopol resident Des Hudson said post office users need to make their voices heard.
"This has to be about people power and sending a message to Australia Post that regardless of current franchisees moving to DTC, the Sebastopol post office is an essential part of the community, we have a lot of ageing members of the community who can't get to DTC, or Redan or Mount Clear," he said.
"Now that Christmas and New Year's is over, pick up the phone, write emails, say to Australia Post that we demand the post office be retained."
In a statement to The Courier last month, Australia Post confirmed the licensee had decided to relocate.
"The relocation will allow them to better support the growth in the surrounding area.
"The outlet is currently servicing many of these customers as their parcels are carded to the outlet.
"The business has also outgrown the current premises and requires a larger shop to better service the existing customer base and to have greater capacity for the parcels received."
Ms Brown said "it's not good enough", and will continue to walk through Sebastopol with the petition.
IN THE NEWS
"I'm assuming there is someone out there that could (run the business), that's what we hope for, that they'll let another lease through," she said.
"There's one in Delacombe, but we're established here."
The Delacombe Town Centre post office is scheduled to open its doors on February 6.
