Police are appealing for witnesses after a tow truck struck an unmarked police car on the Western Freeway on Monday afternoon before fleeing the scene.

The unmarked police station wagon had been travelling westbound in the right-hand lane of the Western Freeway at Hopetoun Park about 4.50pm when a tow truck travelling in the left-hand lane attempted to change lanes.
The truck moved into the right lane and struck the police car, pushing it into the emergency lane where it hit the barrier.

The truck failed to stop, instead continuing to travel west along the freeway.
The driver of the station wagon - a male police sergeant - was not injured.
