A Lake Wendouree resident said it was "frustrating" and "ridiculous" to see two metal detectorists digging holes at a busy part of the lake's gardens on Sunday evening.

"There were going for maybe an hour while I was there - they were digging holes every few minutes, maybe 30 to 50 holes," they said, adding they phoned council's emergency line immediately.
"You could have someone break their ankle or leg, not to mention the destruction could damage the tree roots.
"It's ridiculous that people think they can do that, they would have known they were doing the wrong thing."
A City of Ballarat spokesperson said in a statement an "educative approach" was taken when council officers arrived to speak to the men soon afterward.

"Two men observed on the Lake foreshore were polite when approached by a Council Officer and were unaware of Local Laws preventing digging of holes in Council reserves," they said.
"The City of Ballarat is in the process of updating signage around the Lake which states 'no pegging, digging or staking'."
